Kitty & The Boxing Roo

Following the Royal Canadian Air Force’s ice Avro Arrow, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s ‘stolen’ Avro Vulcan posts (here and here), a suggestion by Errol Cavit on Twitter here, has got me to search out our first piece of aircraft nose art, a Royal Australian Air Force Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk in North Africa, from the Australian War Memorial (AWM) collection.

AWM Caption: “Informal portrait of 401283 Flying Officer (later Flight Lieutenant), Humphrey Arthur Cecil (Slim) Jowett of 450 Squadron, RAAF, at Kairouan, Tunisia, standing in front of a Curtiss P40 Kittyhawk aircraft wearing nose art depicting a boxing kangaroo. The ground crew members (centre and right) are unidentified.”

What’s interesting is this style of boxing kangaroo would be familiar to today, as an Australian national icon, although only with the slouch hat in a military context.
